These arrhythmias cause the heart to beat in an irregular rhythm and much more rapidly than normal. These stricken individuals can suffer from shortness of breath, dizziness, fatigue, weakness, and chest pain. Left untreated, these arrhythmias can result in loss of quality of life, stroke and/or death. Currently, standard of care for patients diagnosed with atrial fibrillation is treatment with drug therapy. Unfortunately, drugs used to treat these arrhythmias are not long-term cures and have unwanted, and at times severe, side effects. CryoCor, Inc. is developing and marketing a novel technology platform used in a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure. Employing the use of extremely cold temperatures (cryoablation), the CryoCor™ Cardiac Cryoablation System blocks the transmission of the abnormal electrical signals that causes arrhythmias. CryoCor's system has received regulatory approval for use in Europe and is being used there to treat atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and other arrhythmias. In the United States, CryoCor's products are being used under an Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) granted by the Food and Drug Administration to evaluate their safety and efficacy in the treatment of atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter. Atrial fibrillation is the most commonly occurring arrhythmia and frequently occurs together with atrial flutter. Seeking a cure for atrial fibrillation is a primary target of CryoCor's activities: Atrial fibrillation (AF) causes a 50% decrease in quality of life. AF increases the rate of stroke by up to 6x and more than doubles the risk of death. AF causes over 80,000 strokes per year in the US. In the US alone, it is estimated that healthcare expenses associated with the treatment of atrial fibrillation and its effects exceed $9 billion each year. The company believes that the CryoCor™ Cardiac Cryoablation System can become the new standard of care for the safe and effective treatment of these arrhythmias and, upon obtaining requisite regulatory approvals, will address a multi-billion dollar market worldwide.
